Way back in February, long before people had to stop gathering because of the Novel Coronavirus, students from Ashton School, Cork, Bandon Grammar School, and Midleton College was enlisted by the their school chaplains – Drew Ruttle, the Reverend Anne Skuse, and Canon Andrew Orr – to re–enact the fifth day of the General Convention on 19th February 1870 when the Preamble and Declaration were read for the first time.
‘Church of Ireland: Disestablishment and Beyond’ was the subject of a conference organised by the Royal Irish Academy to mark the 150th anniversary of the Disestablishment.
Yesterday, in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork, young people from Ashton School, Bandon Grammar School and Midleton College, accepted the invitation of the Bishop of Cork, Dr Paul Colton, to join him, some of the clergy of the Diocese, Dr Richard Clarke (recently retired Archbishop of Armagh), and Bishop Michael Mayes, in re–enacting a seminal moment in the history of the Church of Ireland.
As part of Dublin & Glendalough’s commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland, it is hoped that every Church of Ireland church in the United Dioceses will be open on Culture Night 2020.

A special Archive of the Month focusing on the personal story of the last member of the clergy to be ordained before Disestablishment – the Revd William Somerville–Large (1847–1939) – has been commissioned by the RCB Library as a final contribution to the 150th anniversary for 2019.
