Following the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland by the Irish Church Act of 1869 a General Convention, assembled to devise new administrative structures for the Church, agreed that a General Synod, as the supreme legislative assembly should be established.

The proceedings of the General Synod and the reports of its committees and commissions are published annually in the Journal of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland. The Journal is supplied to the British and Irish copyright libraries and is available for consultation in the RCB Library. Researchers intending to use General Synod records should consult the Journal in the first instance.
