FUNERAL OF CANON G.H.J. BURROWS
There was a large attendance at the Funeral Eucharist of Canon Jerram Burrows in Christ Church Cathedral on Monday 20 October 2003. Canon Burrows, who was in his 93rd year, died at Gascoigne House, Cowper Care Centre, Rathmines. The Dean of Christ Church, Very Revd John Paterson, presided. The Eucharist was celebrated by the Revd Mark Gardner, Dean’s Vicar, assisted by Archdeacon Gordon Linney, Canon Ricky Rountree, Canon John Bartlett, Canon David Pierpoint, and by Canon Burrows’s nephew, Very Revd Michael Burrows, Dean of Cork. The readings were by the Right Revd Michael Mayes, Bishop of Limerick & Killaloe, and by the Revd Jim Sides, a son-in-law of Canon Burrows. There was no address. Intercessions and short Prayerful Reflections led by Dean Burrows recalled aspects of Jerram’s “long, full and influential life which touched so many in so many places.” He said that as a priest Jerram took delight in the ministry of cathedrals in Limerick, Cork, and Ross, and in Dublin’s St Patrick’s and Christ Church. Recalling Jerram’s time as Headmaster of Villiers School, Limerick, and later of Cork Grammar School, Dean Burrows said, “He was a natural teacher, adept in so many subjects. He could restore order amongst unruly teenagers with a look.” Jerram was also a fine scholar and a prolific reader. “He read a myriad of books and periodicals, including the Tablet and the Listener, up to the last.” Jerram and his late wife, Rachel, who were like “chalk and cheese” were well known “for the amazing parties they held in so many places. ” As a host Jerram displayed a wonderful human courtesy and integrity. Burial took place in St Kieran’s Cemetery, Kilkenny. Canon Burrows is survived by his daughters, Mary and Margaret, and their families. |
