DEAN OF DERRY SAYS "THANK YOU"

The Dean of Derry, the Very Reverend William Morton and his wife Rosemary have received tremendous support and messages of goodwill following the recent attacks on the Deanery and the Cathedral School.

Dr Morton, his wife and their three sons, Patrick, 11, Nicholas, 8, and Connor, 4, were asleep when the attack happened in the early hours of Sunday (2 March). Youths threw concrete blocks at windows in the front of their home and in the Cathedral School during a street brawl.

The Dean said: Rosemary and I have been greatly strengthened and encouraged by the large number of people from the Cathedral, the Diocese, the Church of Ireland nationally and from other churches as well who have contacted us with their sympathy and messages of goodwill and support.

This experience, while frightening, has actually brought together people from right across the community as they expressed their solidarity with us and their condemnation of what happened.

The incident has also helped bring awareness of the need for tightening of security not only in the Cathedral Quarter area but also in the Fountain Estate nearby and in the community generally.

We are extremely grateful for such wonderful support and for all the encouragement we have received.
