From Despair to Hope was launched at a ceremony in Trinity College Dublin on Friday, 23 May, 2003. Amongst those at the reception were the Revd Jonathan Pierce, Taney Parish, Revd Dr Alan McCormack, Church of Ireland chaplain to TCD, and Canon Victor Stacey, Rector of Dun Laoghaire. Dr Valerie Jones represented the Dublin & Glendalough Diocesan Committee for Social Action.
The Revd Jonathan Pierce, convenor of a Support Group for People affected by Suicide, writes the following review of the book:
This extremely important book is perhaps the most comprehensive and accessible that I have read on the subject of suicide. It is divided into three parts. The first is a most perceptive analysis in trying to put suicide into context. There are a number of case studies based on real stories and a theological reflection on each one. What is most striking is how ordinary the stories are. All of us will know people whose stories are told.
The second section looks at how we might respond as individuals to those bereaved through suicide. It’s a really practical and helpful section. It does not make judgements but commends the importance of listening and accepting those who find their lives in turmoil.
The third and final section looks at how we can best respond as churches. Some examples of prayers and liturgies are given and the appendix at the back of the book gives a list of helpful addresses and organisations for further reflection. I would recommend it wholeheartedly. Every parish should have a copy.
