BISHOP'S PALACE, KILKENNY

The Representative Church Body (RCB) today welcomed the recent decision by An Bord Pleanála, following third party appeals, to grant permission for the proposed change of use of the Bishop’s Palace, Kilkenny from residential use to use by the Heritage Council as its National Headquarters and for the Representative Church Body to erect a new See House on the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace, subject to certain conditions.

An RCB spokesman said: “It is now intended that formal negotiations will commence between the Representative Church Body and the Heritage Council for the transfer of the Bishop’s Palace to the Heritage Council. The terms of the transfer of the property to the Heritage Council will ensure the continued use by the Church of Ireland of designated public rooms in the building on certain occasions.

“Following the completion of the negotiations with the Heritage Council for the transfer of the Bishop’s Palace, the process of tendering for the construction of the new See House will commence and it is envisaged that the project will be completed in 2005.”
