EASTER DAY CELEBRATION ON RATHLIN ISLAND

Rathlin Island
Rathlin Island

Easter on Rathlin Island this year will be a special time of celebration for the small Church of Ireland congregation of St Thomas’ Parish Church, founded by the monks of Bangor Abbey in 580AD.

The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Revd Alan Harper, will preside at the Holy Communion Service at 11.30 am providing the weather does not disrupt the ferry timetable.

This is the first time the diocesan bishop has visited Rathlin on Easter Day.

St Thomas’ is the only offshore island parish in Northern Ireland. It was destroyed by the Vikings in the 12th century and was not rebuilt until 1722. A renovation project was completed in 1822. Plans are now in hand to refurbish the building in the near future.

Archdeacon Jack Patterson has been rector of Ballintoy, including Rathlin Island, for the past 31 years. He said: “We are looking forward to a major renovation of the building on this very ancient Christian site. We are delighted that the Bishop and his wife, Helen, and some members of his family will be joining the congregation on Easter Day.”

Archdeacon Patterson may be contacted on 028 20762411

The Caledonian McBrayne ferry leaves from Ballycastle at 1030 am. Advance booking is advisable.
