CHURCH LEADERS ATTEND LAUNCH OF EAMES BOOK

Leading Protestant and Roman Catholic clergy including the Presbyterian Moderator the Rt. Reverend Dr Ken Newell and the Emeritus Archbishop of Armagh Cardinal Cahal Daly are among the guests scheduled to attend the launch of a new biography on Thursday 18 November of the Church of Ireland Primate and Archbishop of Armagh Dr Robin Eames. The guests will also include the Clerk of the General Assembly Dr Donald Watts and also a former Presbyterian Moderator the Very Reverend Dr John Dunlop.

The launch of the book titled Nobody?s Fool will take place in the Canada Room in Queen's University at 12.30 p.m., and the speakers will include Archbishop Eames, the author Alf McCreary who is Religion Correspondent of the Belfast Telegraph, and Ms Judith Longman, a senior executive from the London publishers Hodder and Stoughton. The former Bishop of Derry and Raphoe Dr James Mehaffey, a lifelong colleague and friend of the Primate, is also scheduled to speak.

The biography is a frank and revealing analysis of the career of Archbishop Eames during years of dramatic change in Ireland, for which no theological training could have prepared him. He served under three Archbishops of Canterbury and chaired three important Anglican Commissions, including the most recent which produced the Windsor Report.

The book also reveals the high regard with which Archbishop Eames was held by successive British and Irish Prime Ministers and senior politicians, and it outlines his crucial role in helping to draft the important Downing Street Agreement. It also tells the inside story of the Archbishop's key role during the festering Drumcree stand-off, and reveals for the first time the degree of personal stress and strain he experienced during the years of upheaval.

Archbishop Eames speaks candidly for the first time about many of the major issues which arose during his Primacy, and the book has been described by the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams as a "real gift to Anglicans and non-Anglicans, Irish and non-Irish" which "deserves every praise and the warmest welcome."
