Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’
Heritage Week
Heritage Week, which begins tomorrow, (Saturday) is an opportunity for the Church of Ireland to showcases some of the buildings and their contents.
This year St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, has a particularly strong programme of events. There are bespoke tours throughout the week at 2pm, belfry tours tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, churchyard tours led by Adrian Le Harivel on Wednesday, music at midday and organ recitals at 6.30pm. Beginning in Monday there will be a series of lunchtime talks at 1.15pm culminating on Friday with a talk by the Dean, Dr William Morton.
A highlight promises to be a talk on Monday at 6.30 pm when Cathedral Board member, Albert Fenton, will discuss the portraits in St Patrick’s Deanery. There are some thirty portraits of deans and other eminent churchmen, dating from the eighteenth century up to the present time.
In Christ Church cathedral. Dublin, there will be tours, lectures, a strained glass workshop and bell ringing, although such is the popularity of the belfry tours that they are already sold out. Two lectures promise to be of particular interest. On Monday at 1.15pm Kelly Tavolassi will talk about Christ Church, Brazil and Portugal, and on at 1.15pm Wednesday the cathedral’s Head of Learning, Dr Ruth Kenny, will discuss the Lost Alleys of Christ Church focussing on the lost geography of Christ Church Yard and the Cathedral Crypt.
Tomorrow (Saturday) there will be a programme of events in Zion Church, Rathgar, from 10am until 4pm featuring tours, music and talks. David Caron will speak about the stained glass at 12 noon and in the afternoon, Ged Walsh, will talk on Rathgat in the 1870s. Not to be missed is a recital by the celebrated Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society at 12.30pm.
Among the heritage offerings in St Nicholas’ Collegiate, Galway, tomorrow (Saturday) will be an exhibition of the Book of Common Prayer as Gaeilge, first produced in 1608, and translated by Uilliam O’Donnnaill, the then Archbishop of Tuam. This 1712 manuscript is on loan from the RCB Library in Dublin and is from the collection of the former Archbishop of Dublin, Donald Caird.
On Thursday evening at 7.30pm, in St Mary’s Collegiate church, Youghal, a talk by architectural historian, Dr Michael O’Neill, will consider the architecture of St Mary’s in the medieval context, its elevation to a secular collegiate church, and the internal changes in the post–Reformation period.
The lunchtime organ recitals at St Fin Barre’s cathedral, Cork, continue on Friday at 1.10pm when Jack Wilson, from St Anne’s cathedral, Belfast, will play works by American composers: Dan Locklair, Leo Sowerby and Charles Ives.
On Sunday on RTÉ One and RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, the Revd Jack Kinkead will lead a Service with congregation from his parishes in Wicklow and Nun’s Cross while in Cork the Bishop, Dr Paul, Colton, will continue his Silver Jubilee Visits by presiding at the parish Eucharist in Farranthomas and Kinneigh.
