Cooneen Church was endowed by a bequest of the Revd Butler Brooke, who died on 14th November 1869, and is buried in the Brooke family plot in St Ronan’s Church, Colebrooke. The foundation stone was laid by his widow, Mrs Letitia Jane Brooke, on 27th June 1871.

The site for the church in the townland of Tattenabuddagh was given by Sir Victor Brooke.

The money left by the Revd Butler Brooke to build the church, rectory and school house, was in the region of £4,500.

The church was licensed for worship and consecrated by the Bishop of Kilmore on 28 October 1873.

Cooneen can be accessed by following the signs from the main A4 road at Colebrooke.
