Advent Readings

The Season of Advent has begun and with it the start of a new liturgical year and a fresh cycle of daily Scripture readings. Sunday and Weekday Readings 2025, complied by the Revd Ken Rue, published by Church of Ireland Publishing, is now available to assist clergy and lay readers in preparing for and leading worship services.

Readings are available for the principal and second services on Sunday, and for Holy Communion, Morning Prayer, and Evening Prayer for all weekdays until the eve of Advent next year (29th November 2025).

Sunday and Weekday Readings 2025 may be obtained from the Church of Ireland’s online bookstore (https://store.ireland.anglican.org) or from the Book Well, Belfast (email: [email protected]; mobile: 07581 143 596). The price is £3.50/€4.00 per booklet.

Two books which reflect aspects of the history of Church in Dublin have recently  been launched. The Churchwardens’ Accounts of the Parishes of St Bride, St Michael Le Pole and St Stephen, Dublin, 1663–1702, by Ronnie Wallace,  is a critical edition of an important source not only foe the history of the parish of St Bride but also for the wider history of the city of Dublin. St Bride’s church was closed in the late 19th century and subsequently demolished to make way for the Iveagh Buildings.

The Latin Lives of St Laurence of Dublin, edited by the late Maurice F. Roche, is an edition of bis doctoral thesis which was lost for some twenty years, and has now been prepared for publication by Mary Kelly and Professor Charlie Doherty. 11 December 2025 is the 800th anniversary of St Laurence O’Toole’s canonization.

Both books have been published by Four Courts Press.

On Tuesday the much loved Peata Carol Service will be held in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, at 1.15pm, when the nave will be thronged with dogs and, of course, their human companions. Founded in 1996, the organisation provides a dog visiting scheme where volunteers bring their therapy dogs to caring institutions across the city.

The Archbishop of Dublin has appointed Canon Paul Arbuthnot as Dean of Residence and Chaplain to Trinity College Dublin. Canon Arbuthnot will take up the post on 1 January 2025. He is currently Vicar of the parish of St Ann with St Stephen & St Mark.
