Day 1

Bill Amends Synod Representation Table

A Bill to amend the Synod Representation Table in Chapter I of the Constitution to reflect the amalgamation of the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry with the Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe passed its first and second stages at General Synod this morning (Friday May 9).

Proposed by Honorary Secretaries, Canon Malcolm Kingston and Hazel Corrigan, Bill No 1 would replace the ‘Tuam, Killala & Achonry’ and ‘Limerick & Killaloe’ sections in the diocesan table in the Constitution with ‘Tuam, Limerick & Killaloe’ to reflect the amalgamation of the two dioceses in 2022 and merge the representation numbers.

Proposing the Bill, Canon Kingston noted that the proposal would not alter the representation numbers for the new diocese, and that, as per the Constitution, no review of Synod representation numbers would take place until the first year of the triennium beginning in 2030, with any changes not coming into effect until 2033.

The Bill passed its initial stages and will be considered for the final time when Synod meets online on Tuesday evening.
