Day 1

Bill No. 2 Ensures Constitutional Consistency

A Bill which seeks to update the Constitution of the Church of Ireland to reflect two previously approved Bills has been presented at General Synod in Naas today (Friday May 9). Bill No.2 allows for updated referencing in the Constitution to reflect Bills passed in 2022 and 2024 to the effect that parochial nominators and diocesan synod members should be part of the parish for which they are elected to those respective roles.

The Bill was proposed by Honorary Secretaries Canon Gillian Wharton and Ken Gibson and relates to Chapter III of the Constitution.

Canon Wharton explained: “To have a consistency of cross–referencing we now need to amend Chapter III – the chapter which includes how the business of an Easter General Vestry is conducted. This amendment could only happen after the two Bills were passed”.

The Bill will come back before Synod members on Tuesday evening when they meet online for its final stage.
