Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

Artist for Limerick Cathedral

St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, has announced the appointment of its first Artist in Residence, Ms Nici LeGear. She  will begin her residency in mid–September and will be in post until the end of October. The theme of her residency will be ‘Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory’.

The Dean of Limerick, the Very Revd Niall Sloane, in welcoming the appointment, thanked Ms Etain McCooey of Limerick and City & County Council who helped with this project which is funded by the Arts Council and Limerick City and County Council, through the Limerick Arts Programme 2025.

Ms LeGear’s work captures Ireland’s west coast in vibrant oils, exploring the relationship between landscape and human presence. Her recent work along Limerick’s River Shannon led her to focus on how places hold memory, where human experience is felt rather than explicitly shown.

“Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory” will create three oil paintings exploring St Mary’s Cathedral as a living testament to community life. Ancient Roots & Enduring Spirit – Foundational elements and ancient landscape connections, Layers of Time & Resilience – Architectural details revealing centuries of history, and  Contemporary Echoes & Community Life – The Cathedral as vibrant contemporary space.

Alongside the paintings, Nici will create a “Community Tapestry of Voices”—collecting memories and stories from people connected to St Mary’s cathedral. Drop–in sessions will be announced soon.

Tonight (Friday) Culture Night in Calary parish church, Co. Wicklow, will feature Andrew Sheeran (violin) and Catriona Finnegan (cello) who will play a recital including works by JS Bach, Caroline Shaw, Peteris Vaks, Maurice Ravel, together with traditional Irish and Danish pieces. Under the Tree is one of the Church’s Ministry of Healing’s most popular events. It will be held on 30 September, 7–8.30pm, in Rathmines. Lydia and Julie will facilitate this 90–minute session in the old orchard, beginning with settling–in practices and nature connection prompts. After this there will be some  time in a Scripture Circle – nourishing mind, body and spirit. The evening invites wondering, listening and curiosity. Book your place via www.ministryofhealing.ie
