Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

DUFEM

Dr Eimhin Walsh, Chairman of Dublin University Mission, and Dr Kerry Houston, Hon Treasurer of DUFEM and Chairman of the Friends of the Church in China, are on a short visit to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

In Hong Kong they will present a DUFEM prize to the Revd Leung Chi Wai (Jason), at the annual graduation ceremony of Ming Hua Theological College which has close links with the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. This prize is in memory of the late Revd Professor John Bartlett who was Principal of CITI and President of DUFEM and was very active in the mission over many decades.

Kerry and Eimhin will also meet Ms Queenie Leong, an ordinand from the Diocese of Macau who will be taking a placement at CITI in Hilary term supported by Ming Hua, CITI and DUFEM. They will also visit the Diocesan archives in Hong Kong where there are records with direct relevance to the history of DUFEM. They will also meet with Revd Stephen Miller who is the South East Asia Director of the Mission to Seafarers to explore possibilities of Irish students taking placements at the mission.

In Taiwan they will be meeting Bishop Lennon Yuan–Rung Chang and other diocesan representatives to discuss partnership possibilities. DUFEM had strong connections with Taiwan in the past which we lately nurtured by John Bartlett.

Canon Simon Doogan, Rector of Ballyholme in the Diocese of Down & Dromore, will lead Morning Service this Remembrance Sunday on BBC Radio Ulster and Radio Foyle at 9.03am.

On Tuesday, to mark the 800th anniversary of the canonization of St Laurence O’Toole, the series of free lunchtime lectures continues at 1.10pm in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin.  Dr Jesse Harrington, of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, will speak on the christening of Laurence, the importance of baptism as a Christian sacrament, godparents and Gaelic and Latin naming customs. The lectures take place in the chapter house building upstairs which is at present only accessible by stairs. For further information on this series, email the cathedral research advisor, Dr Stuart Kinsella, at [email protected]

On Thursday the 800th anniversary of the canonization of St Laurence will be celebrated at Festal Evensong in Christ  Church cathedral, Dublin, at 6pm.

Places are still available for the Commission on Ministry’s Advent Retreat which will be hosted at the Manresa Retreat Centre, Clontarf, Dublin, from the evening of Friday, 28 November, to lunchtime on Sunday, 30 November. This year’s retreat is entitled ‘Shall God’s wonders be known?’ and will be led by the former Dean of Belfast, the Very Revd John Mann.  The title for the retreat teases us with layers of meaning, considering its source, which is the beginning of Psalm 88 verse 14: “Shall your wonders be known in the dark or your righteous deeds in the land where all is forgotten?” Bookings will close tomorrow (Saturday).
