Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

Spring Issue of Search

The spring issue of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, edited by Canon Ginnie Kennerley, has been distributed to subscribers.

Conflict and how to bring good out of its threats is a common theme for most of the issue.

First, conflict within the Anglican Communion, which Bishop Kenneth Kearon, a former Secretary General of the Communion, addresses while the Revd Ruth Elmes, Rector of Dalkey, follows up with a personal message of support for the incoming Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally.

A hopeful legacy of the Troubles is the account by Archdeacon Robert Miller and his psychiatrist twin, Paul Miller, of Derry’s ambulant Walled City Passion Play which for many years has offered healing to those stuck in the trauma of the 1990s.

Three contributions offer thoughts on moving towards peace and mutual sharing in the Middle East. Ed Kessler, founder director of the Woolf Institute in Cambridge, stresses the need for respectful listening; Maurice Cohen, Chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland, warns that empathy must be extended to all sides of a dispute; and a Palestinian Christian from Bethlehem, now in Dublin, shares his own community’s story.

Conflict aside, Lucas Mix, of the Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science project at Durham University, reflects on the divine energy in all creation, from its smallest to its greatest manifestation, and there is an ‘In Retrospect’ tribute to the late Canon Billy Marshall.

Search is available both in hard copy and digital format. Subscription details may be had at https://searchjournal.ireland.anglican.org/subscribe

Racial Justice Sunday has been observed since 1995, and currently takes place on the second Sunday of February. The Liturgical Advisory Committee has produced a Service of the Word for Racial Justice Sunday for use in the Church of Ireland, which is introduced by Archbishop John McDowell.  Further information about celebrating Racial Justice Sunday can be found on the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland website.

Information about services within the Church of Ireland may be found at this page.

In Dublin there will be a Songs of Praise service on Sunday at 6pm in St Philip’s church, Milltown. All are invited to come and sing some favourite hymns that have been chosen by the parishioners.

The series of lunchtime lectures to celebrate the conservation of the clerestory windows will continue in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, on Tuesday at 1.10pm. The medieval historian and former member of the cathedral chapter, Canon Adrian Empey, will speak about the dioceses of the Church of Ireland which are the subject of the decoration of the windows.  Th lectures are supported by the Friends of Christ Church.

A new guide to St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, has been published. A series of contributors introduce the cathedral’s history, its treasures, monuments, bells, misericords, music, personalities, graveyard and stained glass. The text is complemented by many colour illustrations.
