Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’
Summer Search
Later this month, in Belfast, the Anglican Consultative Council will met in Ireland for the first time and so, appropriately, the summer issue of the Church of Ireland journal, Search, is devoted to matters Anglican. Appropriately, too, this issue has been edited by Dr Bridget Nichols, Lecturer in Anglicanism and Liturgy in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute.
Bishop Graham Tomlin explains the genesis of the Nairobi Cairo Proposals which, if adopted in Belfast, will reposition relationships within the AC almost a century after a definition of these relationships, centered upon the See of Canterbury, was first attempted. Archbishop John McDowell offers a close examination of what might be the subject of determinative change following ACC–19: the “Instruments of Communion”.
It would be naïve to pretend that the meeting takes place against a tranquil background in Church or world and so Dublin born David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus, in Cambridge, traces the journey from a significant meeting of bishops in Porto in 2000, while his younger brother, Alan, Professor Emeritus of Theology in Nottingham, considers the way religion in Ireland has been studied and represented..
Lindsay Yates, Canon Precentor of Canterbury Cathedral, provides the inside story of the installation of the Archbishop of Canterbury describing how careful choreography articulated the way in which we can expect this office to be exercised in the future.
Continuing the liturgical theme, the Revd Neil Vigers, from the Anglican Communion Office, surveys the paradox of shared heritage and diversity in the expression of Anglican worship worldwide.
