EASTER MESSAGE 2002

The Most Reverend Dr Robin Eames,
Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of all Ireland

This Easter I am particularly conscious of the needs of children and young people in this world. Almost every day TV screens portray across the globe the anxious and often tearful faces of children caught up in war, ravaged by hunger, deprived of parents or homes – desperate faces of innocence. Equally we see so much evidence of young people forced to play a part in the horrors of wars and violence – the child soldiers. Nearer home the number of cases of attacks on children is on the increase. On a global scale the most precious part of any community, its children, are victims in horrific ways of man’s inhumanity to man.

The Christian message of Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, speaks to every nation and every age-group of hope, love and reassurance. It speaks to every human situation. It speaks most loudly where there is denial of the right to life and human happiness.

But the Easter message compels a response.

The empty tomb urges those who believe in Christ to live lives and exert influence where they are in the name of the Risen Lord. Those first believers rushed away from the Empty Tomb to spread the dramatic news of the Resurrection.

Today this sad world needs to hear again the voices of hope and the cries for justice of the first Easter. At home and abroad those voices must sound out loud and clear. Wherever there is human need the real hope of the Christian Easter must compel lives of goodness and faith to change a world order which permits human suffering, human misery and human injustice.

If we are the ‘Easter people’ we must reach out to those of any age-group who know only suffering and want …
