ARCHBISHOP EAMES WELCOMES IRA STATEMENT
The Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames today welcomed the IRA statement issued yesterday.
Archbishop Eames said: “Every step no matter how faltering or restricted towards a recognition of the evils and hurt of the past must be welcomed.
“Viewed from within the history of Irish Republicanism this statement represents a significant admission but I would have welcomed wording which acknowledged all those whose lives were taken during the terrorist campaign.
“As this society struggles to come to terms with its past the tragic loss of any life, Roman Catholic or Protestant, civilian or member of the security forces, was a life too many.
“Only when we acknowledge our part in the hurt and loss of those years as a whole will we take the major step of closing a door on our own tragic past. So much more remains to be done in closing that door.”
