NEW YEAR MESSAGE

ARCHBISHOP ROBIN EAMES:
'HOPE MUST BE BASED ON REALISM'

“Realism and hope must be the key words for Northern Ireland in 2002. Our hope must stem from what has already been achieved in facing up to our problems. Despite all the political and community obstacles we must not forget how far we have already come. But our hope must be based on realism.

“We still have a very long way to go. Violent attacks on Protestant and Roman Catholic homes, sectarian assaults and intimidation mean it is hard for many to believe in any process of peace. The responsibility on all community leaders at the dawn of a New Year is immense. The task for all of us is to translate hope into reality, which will be strong enough to overcome the hatred and division.

“Above all, sectarianism remains a dangerous and corrosive shadow on all our lives. The Christian voice of love, courage and possibility must continue to be heard in our society as it urges us on to stability, justice and equality for everyone.

“At the beginning of a New Year may God help us to believe that good does overcome evil and that justice is the real road to peace.”
