On Being a Bishop: Reminiscences and Reflections
new book by Roy Warke launched in Dublin

In this book Roy Warke draws on his experiences as Bishop of Cork Cloyne and Ross from 1980 - 1998 and writes of the Church of Ireland today from an episcopal perspective.
In a chapter controversially entitled, Does God really want Bishops? he quotes some words of advice from a colleague: 85% of your time will be spent on mundane duties. For 10% of the time you will be on a high, 5% of the time you will experience a living hell. Bishop Warke uses a number of situations that arose within the Church of Ireland during the 1990s to demonstrate the truth behind this statement. As he discusses issues from episcopal elections to pulpit politics he defines the issues that face bishops today and their role within the Church of Ireland.
Bishop Warke discusses the undermining of the Episcopal role within the Church and warns that the Church of Ireland may be in danger of losing one of the distinctive features of its identity. He examines the different roles of a bishop as pastor pastorum and the loneliness that can be experienced as a bishop within the Church of Ireland.
He discusses various controversial issues that arose during his time as Bishop of Cork, such as the Lambeth Conference and Resolution 1.10 on human sexuality, and the closure of many Anglican churches in Ireland. In the bishop's experience such closures were always traumatic and the involvement of the parishioners in every step of the process was of prime importance.
On Being a Bishop: Reminiscences and Reflections is published by The Columba Press, price Euro 10.99/ Stg£ 7.50 It was launched in Dublin on Tuesday 20 April 2004.
