ARMAGH SYNOD CONCERN AT LACK OF POLICING

The Church of Ireland Armagh Diocesan Synod today expressed its concern at the lack of policing in many areas of Northern Ireland.

The Synod passed the following resolution:

“The Diocesan Synod wishes to communicate to the Right Hon. Dr John Reid, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, a request that he should intimate to the Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, our concern at the lack of policing in many areas of Northern Ireland.

“For example, recent disturbances in Keady clearly illustrate that present policing levels are inadequate to enforce the law. Similar events occur elsewhere and indicate that the police are unable to deal effectively with vandalism and riotous behaviour.

“The implementation of the Patten Report on recruitment seems to promise no better future. Our need is for security in our towns and homes. This should not be sacrificed to political correctness. People of many political and religious persuasions are united in their desire that law and order should be the first priority of government.”

The resolution was proposed by Canon Bill Neely, Rector of Keady and seconded by the Revd William Paine, Rector of Tynan.
