MURDER OF DAVID CALDWELL IN LONDONDERRY

Statement by the Rt. Revd Ken Good
Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe

Monday 5th August 2002

The Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, the Rt Revd Ken Good has condemned the recent murder of David Caldwell. Bishop Good said:

“The cruel murder of David Caldwell going about his daily work is an outrage that must be condemned in the strongest of terms. Those who, in a pre-meditated and callous manner, set out to kill or maim in this way have not only committed a moral outrage, but have inflicted on Mr Caldwell’s loved ones immeasurable pain and loss.

“I would urge any group that may be contemplating a violent response to this outrage to avoid falling into the trap of a tit-for-tat series of murders that achieves nothing but increased personal misery and social mistrust.

“The thirtieth anniversary of the 1972 Claudy bombings has reminded us all too well of the damage and desolation that outrages like these leave with the families of those directly affected, but also of the deep wounds that are inflicted on wider society too.

“The path of violence has been tried and has failed. New, better and more creative ways forward must be found in peace.”
