CHURCH OF IRELAND CLERGY CONCERNS OVER NORTH BELFAST

The Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, accompanied by the Bishop-elect of Connor, the Venerable Alan Harper, today met with clergy working in North Belfast to consider the current situation in the area.

The clergy shared their experiences and underlined the feelings of deprivation, frustration and fear, which are dominating the hearts and minds of their parishioners.

The clergy also expressed their concerns about grievances brought to them by local people, which they believe are genuine and require urgent consideration.

In condemning all acts of violence the clergy particularly expressed sympathy with the family of the young postal worker who was murdered this morning.

As a consequence of this meeting the Church of Ireland Clergy of North Belfast are to request a meeting with the Secretary of State so that he may learn at first hand of their experiences in North Belfast including evidence of the positive work of the churches in that community.
