DIFFERENT FAITHS IN CORK MEET FOR DIALOGUE

On Saturday next 8th June, the home of Cork’s Church of Ireland Bishop - The Right Reverend Paul Colton – will be the venue for exploratory conversations between Cork people - some of whom are Christians (priests and laity) and others who are members of other world Faiths.

The Inter-Faith Forum (entitled First Steps in Inter-Faith Dialogue) is to be introduced and facilitated by Canon Michael Ipgrave from Leicester (an increasingly pluralist and inter-faith community in these islands) who is secretary of the Churches' Commission for Inter Faith Relations, one of the ecumenical commissions of the organization Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

The day is a joint initiative of Bishop Colton and the St Fin Barre’s Cathedral Steering Committee to the Immigrant Support Centre, NASC.

Issuing the invitation to representatives, Bishop Paul Colton said:

"Most of us know about ecumenical work between Christian Churches. Inter-Faith dialogue is a step further - exploration between Christians and followers of the world’s other great faith traditions.

"In contemporary society, as Ireland becomes more cosmopolitan and pluralist, none of us can doubt the increasing importance of inter-faith encounter and dialogue. On a global level we have become acutely aware of this, since 11th September 2001. The irony is that while this has come to the fore locally since the recent welcome arrival of so many new friends and neighbours from other countries, the reality is that here in Cork, in spite of the perception of a monochrome demography of religious affiliation, for many years there have been significant numbers of other faiths in our community."

Bishop John Buckley, while unable to attend, has sent his prayerful good wishes and is to be represented.
