"BUILD THE PEACE - A FITTING MEMORIAL" Bishop Colton
“This task is not for someone somewhere else to do, it is something that has to begin with us here as well”
Speaking at Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork at 12 noon today – the first anniversary of the deaths of so many in the United States of America as a result of terrorist attacks - the Right Reverend Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork presided at the Cathedral’s daily Service and said:
“There is heated debate about what should be done on the site of the Twin Towers at Ground Zero. However, the most fitting memorial we can build to those who died then and in wars since is the peace of the world founded on justice for all. This task is local as well as global. For their part, Christians still face the immense task of interpreting in action those challenging words of Jesus Christ such as ‘Love your enemies’ and of Bible such as ‘Overcome evil with good’.
Offering prayers of remembrance and for the peace of the world Bishop Colton also said that we should not leave the task of peace-building to someone else somewhere else. “Even locally we all have this responsibility as we encounter the many challenges in our own changing society.”
