STATEMENT FROM THE BISHOP OF CONNOR WITH REGARD TO CHURCH DAMAGE

"I am shocked to hear about the fires in two Roman Catholic Churches in County Antrim. My sympathy is with the congregation in Randalstown who's church was gutted and with those in Antrim where the church was damaged. I also feel for the members of the Baptist Church in East Belfast where there was a serious fire earlier in the week. Churches are special to us because they are where we take our lives and our needs to God. To see them damaged or destroyed is to feel part of ourselves taken away. If these attacks turn out to be sectarian in nature, I would condemn them and appeal for those with any information to inform the police, and to those doing such actions to stop.

"Apart from churches, halls and business premises being destroyed, with all the hurt, frustration and upset caused, the arson attacks on peoples houses or residential homes has the added potential to kill or cause serious injury. It is vital therefore, that this evil be stopped."
