MARKETHILL BOMB OUTRAGE

Statement from The Most Revd Dr Robin Eames, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland

I am horrified and dismayed to learn of the outrage at Markethill. I thank God that no-one was inujured in this attack and utterly condemn such a callous action.

We had all hoped that such attacks had been consigned to the past. Whoever was responsible clearly intended to influence the talks process. It is now more important than ever that the longsuffering people of Northern Ireland can see hope for their future through determined and courageous political debate. Terrorism must not write our agenda for the future. We must all pray and encourage our political representatives to keep the vision of a just and permanent peace before this community.

The Church of Ireland Standing Committee meeting in Dublin today passed the following resolution on behalf of the Church throughout Ireland.

The Standing Commmittee of the Church of Ireland welcomes the current talks process which is taking place at this time in Northern Ireland.

The Standing Committee encourages and supports the participation of all those who are genuinely seeking a secure and lasting peace by political dialogue and democratic action.

The Church of Ireland will seek to play its part in the work of reconciliation and healing within these islands.
