EXTRACTS FROM ARCHBISHOP'S SERMON - The first lay canons in the Church of Ireland were installed by the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames
It has long been my intention to find some way of recognising the role of dedicated lay members in the life and administration of our Church. When the General Synod some years ago accepted a Bill to make it possible for the Primate to appoint lay canonries to St Patrick's Cathedral the way was open to grant that recognition and I warmly congratulate those who have taken their places this evening. Each has made a unique contribution to the life of this Church and each is an example to others.
But what is more important than tribute to individuals is the symbolism I want to see associated with their appointment. Irrespective of their personal contributions they take their places tonight as representatives of thousands of others who day in and day out devote their time, energy and expertise to the support of the Church of Ireland. In parishes and dioceses throughout Ireland, in tasks which rarely attract attention - on Select Vestries, on diocesan and central committees, on the Standing Committee of the General Synod, the Representative Church Body, the General Synod and the various diocesan synods - countless men and women offer their talents so that our Church may conduct its business in the best possible way.
Our gratitude to them all is immense. Without the lay contribution to the work of the Church of Ireland our mission and our witness would be impossible. On my visits to parishes and dioceses throughout Ireland I am constantly reminded that the real strength of our Church lies in the commitment of its laity.
It is my hope that in generations to come successive Primates will be able to nominate representatives to these canonries at St Patrick's who will symbolise the on-going role of our laity in the life of the Church of Ireland".
