BELFAST CHURCH CONFERENCE WELCOMES SWEDISH PARTNERS
The fifth anniversary of the establishment of the first Diocesan partnership under the Porvoo Declaration will be marked by a two-day conference in Belfast later this month.
Bishop Martin Lind and members of the Linkoping Diocesan Council from the Church of Sweden will be the guests of Bishop Alan Harper and 60 delegates from the Church of Ireland Diocese of Connor.
Delegates will hear speakers from both churches examine their understanding and practice of mission before considering in what ways they can do mission together.
A spokesperson for the ‘Partners in World Mission’ Committee in Connor Diocese which organised the conference said: “This is a unique opportunity to consider the power of mission within the context of Northern Ireland and that of Sweden, discovering together how we can be encouraged and challenged through the Gospel of Christ we are called to proclaim and live out.”
Since 1997, several links between parishes in Connor and Linkoping have been set up and a number of exchange visits involving parishioners have taken place.
The Bishop of Connor, the Right Rev. Alan Harper visited Linkoping last year.
The Porvoo Agreement of 1986 brought the Anglican Church of the British Isles and the Nordic Baltic and Scandinavian Lutheran Episcopal Churches into full communion.
The venue for the conference, to be held on October 18 and 19, will be the Connor Diocesan Office, 61-67 Donegall Street, Belfast.
