BISHOP SPEAKS OUT FOLLOWING ROBBERY AT CASTLEWELLAN RECTORY

News that Canon Robin & Mrs Georgina Greer had been robbed in their rectory home in Castlewellan on Monday evening, 29th April,  has caused shock and horror in the Diocese of Down and Dromore. The ordeal began when Mrs Greer answered a knock at the door around 10.30 p.m. Two men – one armed with a handgun and the other with a hunting knife – forced their way in. They were tied up and their eyes covered whilst the intruders ransacked the house. They escaped with cash and credit cards using the family car.

Bishop Harold Miller, following his visit to Canon & Mrs Greer, said “Such an attack on two people coming up to retirement is indicative of the deep sickness of violence, which is still very much to the fore in our society. Those who commit such acts prey on people who are physically weaker than themselves. They have no respect for either holy places or holy people. May God give strength to both Canon Robin Greer and his wife Georgina as they come to terms with this ordeal. Both have spent their entire lives serving and helping others, and it is tragic that this should have happened to them just a month before they retire”.

Bishop Harold Miller will be in Castlewellan parish this evening (Wednesday 1st May) for Confirmation at 8 p.m.
