POLICE RECRUITMENT SHOWS 'HEALTHY TREND'

Archbishop Robin Eames today welcomed a ‘healthy trend’ in the growing number of recruits to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

He said: “The latest figures show that the projected strength of the PSNI at 31 March 2003 is 9,500 full time officers with the recruitment campaign attracting a significant response from both communities that will enable an annual intake of over 500 recruits on a 50% Catholic, 50% non-Catholic basis. This is a healthy trend and well in excess of Patten’s recommended annual intake of 370 recruits a year.”

The figures were released in response to a written question on projected numerical strengths for 2002-3 of the Police Service of Northern Ireland by Lord Eames in the House of Lords.
