MAJOR EVENT POSTPONED IN ARMAGH

The Church of Ireland today announced the postponement of the official re-opening of Church House in Armagh following the major refurbishment of the building. The event was planned for Friday, 6 April 2001.

The decision to postpone the ceremony was taken because of the outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease at Meigh and Ravensdale, which are both within the Diocese of Armagh.

The Archdeacon of Armagh, the Venerable Raymond Hoey, speaking in the absence of Archbishop Eames who is in New Zealand, said: “We offer our sympathy and prayers to those in the farming community and related industries who are undergoing such anxiety and distress because of the present situation.

"Hopefully we can re-arrange the opening ceremony at a later date when visitors can come and see the excellent outcome of our major renovation programme."

The decision follows the issue of guidelines to Church of Ireland parishes in relation to foot-and-mouth outbreaks, including advice on postponing all non-essential events involving bringing people together from farming communities.
