Statement on Media Reports
Statement from The Most Revd Dr Robin Eames, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland
I have been extremely disturbed to read in the press the contents of a document apparently circulated within the Northern Ireland Office regarding policy and the forthcoming Referendum on the future of the Province. The text of the document contains reference to Church Leaders in general but there is particular reference to me personally in terms of 'opinion formers'.
I have no knowledge of this document other than its publication in the media. However I view its contents with extreme alarm.
At no time in the past have I allowed myself to be so used nor at any time in the future will I do so. I have no knowledge of any Church Leader adopting such a role. To suggest otherwise would be to undermine the integrity of all who have honestly and openly sought to promote good relations within this community. I resent any suggestions that a Church Leader would be used in this manner. I feel that any such attempt would greatly damage the authority and integrity of government.
At this sensitive time when the thoughts and prayers of so many are directed towards a peaceful and stable future for this country the suggestion that any pressure should be brought on a Church Leader to act in this manner is deplorable.
I would therefore welcome a clear and unambiguous statement by the Secretary of State that no attempt will be made to influence the attitude of any Church Leader in such an irresponsible manner.
