Statement by The Working Group on Political Development of the Role of the Church Committee
Since 1994 our Political Developments Group has had official and substantial contact with almost all the political parties, and other groups,, in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. We have been reminded recurrently of the complexity of the political, cultural and religious ideas, policies and beliefs held by many parties and bodies. Above all, we have been concerned about the terrible suffering, murder, injury and destruction to property over the last thirty years, and we express our hope and desire for a society reconciled and at peace with itself . We thank those who by their political courage have produced an Agreement which has won the support of the vast majority of people North and South.
The Northern Ireland Assembly
With these considerations in mind, we welcome the new Northern Ireland Assembly. Notwithstanding the depth and range of political feeling and thinking in the Assembly, we urge all its members to find a new way forward together, manifestly, and practically, demonstrating the commitment to justice, peace and mutual respect. Every sectional interest group has opportunities to be pro-active and generous, voluntarily taking steps to develop trust. People need reassuring, that the war is over. It is important for politicians and people to grasp the significance of the moment and to exert every effort and influence to advance reconciliation, and to put the disastrous consequences of division and conflict behind us for good.
Garvaghy Road
With this in mind, we endorse the recent statement of the Archbishop of Armagh and senior clergy of Armagh Diocese, appealing to the Orange Order to act peaceably and within the law. We urge the Orange Order and the residents of the Garvaghy Road to consider the greater justice to be served by avoiding confrontation at this tense and critical time.
'And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.' James 3:18
