Statement by The Bishop of Down and Dromore, The Rt Revd Harold Miller

In the course of last night, there were eight arson attacks on Roman Catholic Churches in Northern Ireland. Four of these were in County Down. As the Church of Ireland Bishop of Down and Dromore, I want to express my sympathy with those who have suffered as a result of these attacks. A church is a very special place for those who worship there - a place where people meet with their Lord, and a place which holds memories of the most significant moments in life. Such arson attacks are an invasion of all that is most important in people's lives.

I would also wish to affirm strongly that there is no excuse and no justification possible for this concerted sectarianism. In the light of yesterdays first meeting of the Assembly, it is a reminder that there are still forces of darkness deep within our province. We must continue to do all we can to build up trust and respect between our communities, and ensure that we do not fall back into a pointless and depressing cycle of violence and destruction.
