Statement by the Bishop of Connor the Rt Rev James Moore
I was horrified to hear of the eight attacks on Roman Catholic churches throughout Northern Ireland last night. Obviously, with so many incidents occuring at one time, this was a planned programme of violence to cause hurt to the Roman Catholic community. I condemn what has happened and I would ask members of the Church of Ireland in my Diocese of Connor to join with me in apologising to our Roman Catholic neighbours for what has happened and to express sympathy with them. I have personally expressed my feelings of regret to Bishop Patrick Walsh, Bishop of Down and Connor.
A Church means a great deal to Christian people because of the important spiritual events which it represents in our lives such as baptisms, marriages and funerals. To lose our church or to see it damaged feels like a bereavement, a deep loss. I am sorry that such hurt has been caused, not least at a time when with the new Assembly efforts are being made to come together to create a peaceful and settled future for all our people.
