Medieval music opens Christ Church, Dublin exhibition

MEDIEVAL MUSIC OPENS CHRIST CHURCH, DUBLIN EXHIBITION

On Saturday, 19 June 2004, at 8pm, Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Dublin, directed by Judy Martin, will give a concert of choral and organ music in the cathedral to mark the opening of the cathedral?s treasury exhibition of medieval monastic manuscripts. This exhibition is open from 1 st June until 31 st August.

Manuscripts from the medieval priory of Holy Trinity, Dublin which contain the plainsong repertory of British monastic worship prior to the Reformation will be on display.

Peter Parshall, Cathedral Manager, said: ?This exhibition offers a tantalizing glimpse of Christ Church?s musical tradition through the centuries. In particular one manuscript from Trinity College Library contains a wonderful example of chants in use in the sixteenth century. The Cathedral Choir will sing a selection of pieces based on chants from this manuscript.?

This unique concert will be introduced by Barra Boydell, a senior lecturer in music at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth and the author of ?A History of Music at Christ Church Cathedral?.

The programme will include works by John Sheppard, Robert White, Thomas Tallis, John Taverner and Walter Lambe.

After the concert the audience will be invited to a reception in the cathedral?s crypt where they can view the exhibition.
