MINISTER DE VALERA TO OFFICIALLY OPEN CATHEDRAL EXHIBITION

Silverware used by King Billy after the Battle of the Boyne on display On Wednesday 30 May 2001 at 7.00 pm the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the The Islands, Ms Sile de Valera, TD, will officially open Treasures of Christ Church, a permanent exhibition in Christ Church Cathedral's refurbished medieval crypt.

The exhibition includes a unique range of manuscripts, historic artefacts and spectacular examples of gold and silver ware. Of particular interest are the silver gilt plate given by William III (King Billy) in thanksgiving for his victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and the restored tabernacle used in Christ Church during the return to the Roman Catholic liturgy under James II.

The exhibition is introduced by a Louis Marcus film explaining the history of the display and its role in 1000 years of worship in the Cathedral and in Dublin city churches.

The official opening of Treasures of Christ Church will take place after Choral Evensong sung by the Cathedral Girls' Choir. Founded in 1995 it was the first cathedral girls' choir in these islands.

The exhibition is the latest in a series of important developments at Christ Church. During 2000, 7 new bells were installed making it the largest numbers of bells in the world to ring in the new Millennium. Restoration work on the crypt was completed and a history of the Cathedral launched by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. The Heritage Council provided a grant of £750,000 towards the £1.3 million crypt restoration work.

Treasures of Christ Church designed by Orna Hanly Architects is open to the public at the following times:

  • Weekdays: 9.45 am to 5.00 pm
  • Saturdays: 10.00 am to 4.45 pm
  • Sundays: 12.30 am to 3.15 pm

(Last entry 30 minutes before closing)
