A Statement from the Bishop of Down and Dromore on recent pipe bomb attacks

There have been forty-two pipe bomb attacks in the Province since the beginning of the year - which means there has been more than one a day on average.

Such violence directed towards the homes, lives and families of people is inexcusable - and I utterly condemn all of these attacks whether against Catholics or Protestants. They are a reminder to us of the destructive attitudes and bitter sectarianism which are never far from the surface in our society.

They also highlight the dangerous political stalemate in which we find ourselves at this moment, and I urge all politicians to work with an ever greater sense of urgency to find political resolutions.

It is also important for every person of goodwill in the community to thoroughly condemn such attacks and to refuse to countenance any conversation which would seek to excuse them. They have no place in civilised society and are utterly opposed to the way of Christ. Every person, made in the image of God, has a right to live securely and without attack in their own home.
