FOOT AND MOUTH: STATEMENT BY CHURCH OF IRELAND HOUSE OF BISHOPS

The House of Bishops of the Church of Ireland meeting in Dublin on 2nd and 3rd April spent time considering the implication of the recent Foot and Mouth outbreaks and the ongoing anxiety with which we live. We express our solidarity with the whole agricultural community, especially those suffering at first hand through isolation, economic loss and the deep pain at the extermination of flocks and herds.

This crisis has provided an opportunity for all sections in Ireland to work together to prevent the spread of the virus. We have been made to realise afresh our dependence on one another.

It is important that we recognise the extent of suffering experienced by all sections of the community. There is a widespread sense of loss through the breakdown of social and recreational activity, but more seriously widespread loss of employment in industry and tourism.

Our prayer is that we will continue to recognise the wide consequence of this crisis, so as to support in every way possible those suffering directly or indirectly. "Bear one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ."
