YOUNG PEOPLE CELEBRATE CHRISTIAN UNITY WEEK
| One of the last events to be encouraged by the late Dean Jack Shearer is the Celebration for Christian Unity to be held in St Anne's Cathedral on Thursday, 18 January at 11am. More than 300 sixth formers from Belfast Royal Academy and St Malachy's College will attend and take part in a service around the theme "Pilgrims together with Christ as the Way". Canon Raymond Fox, Vicar Choral, said; "Jack Shearer was excited about this celebration and saw it as an important part of bridge-building in a divided society. It is a real opportunity to bring sixth formers together in the Cathedral as a practical exercise in outreach. "These are the people who will be the leaders of the future as we move hopefully towards a new and vibrant society. During the service young people will use images of the Christian Life such as a Cross, a bowl of water and a bible, to symbolise themselves as pilgrims together with Christ as the Way." The service will challenge attitudes that "stick to old ways .. that prefer the comfortable and easy way .. that stand still". It will also reflect on how "we hold on to the images and prejudices we have of one another .. unwilling to challenge intolerance, greed and the abuse of power." The joint service will be led by Canon Fox and Rev Paul Symonds, St Malachy's College. The preacher will be the Rt. Rev Harold Miller, Bishop of Down and Dromore. |
