Time Capsule celebrating 1500th Anniversary - MACARTAN 1500 PROJECT
Pupils at St Mary’s Primary School and Newtownbutler Primary School have been working together to celebrate 1500 years since St Macartan by contributing to a time capsule.
Both schools gathered beside Newtownbutler’s Community Centre on Monday, 25 June 2007 to see the time capsule being placed in the public seating area with kind permission from Fermanagh District Council.
The event was co-ordinated by the Macartan 1500 Project, an initiative celebrating 1500 years since the death of Clogher Diocese’s patron saint - St Macartan. The Project is part financed by the European Union through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation and managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC).
Children from both schools had been compiling material for the time capsule. Items included CD ROMs, photographs, clothing items, leaflets, magazines and biographies. Clogher Diocese contributed information about the Macartan 1500 Project and commemorative memorabilia.
Spokeswoman for the project, Kellie Beacom commented, “In 25 years it will be fascinating to see how things have changed since 2007. We hope that the pupils who contributed will enjoy reflecting upon their thoughts and aspirations when it is unearthed in 2032.”
This was the second time capsule ceremony that has taken place for the Macartan 1500 Project, the first time capsule was recently placed in the garden of Belleek Pottery.
