Statement by the Bishop of Clogher following the conviction of the Revd Stephen Crowther

The Bishop of Clogher, the Right Revd Michael Jackson today issued the following statement:

“I wish to express my deep distress at the nature of the offences relating to the possession of indecent images of children which resulted in the conviction of the Revd Stephen Crowther today. This has also caused great distress to his fellow clergy and to the community. I see this as a betrayal of ministry.

“The Revd Crowther ceased all pastoral duties as soon as the PSNI investigation was made known to the diocese. The safety and wellbeing of members of the parish remains of paramount importance to the diocese together with the provision of pastoral care, worship and support for parishioners, provided since 2005 by a retired member of the clergy in the diocese. Such provision will continue in place.”
