Statement by the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Reverend Alan Harper on the forthcoming resignation of an Taoiseach Bertie Ahern

The Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd Alan Harper said:

“The resignation of An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, effective from 6 May 2008, will bring to an end a significant career in Irish politics. Undoubtedly, Mr Ahern’s most significant legacy will be the crucial role he played in securing peace in Northern Ireland, transforming relationships between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, and seeing in place structures of government in Northern Ireland that not only promise long term stability but also are shaped to offer ample opportunity to promote cordial cooperation at government level between the two jurisdictions.

“I believe that it is also important to acknowledge the initiative taken by Mr Ahern in facilitating structured dialogue between government, the churches and other faith groups in the Republic of Ireland. Although in its infancy, this initiative offers a unique opportunity for the churches to engage constructively with government for the benefit of all the people. It is something that I warmly welcome and for which the Church of Ireland is most grateful.”
