First Wedding of the Century at St Thomas' Church, Rathlin Island
St Thomas’ Church of Ireland church on Rathlin Island was the picturesque setting for the wedding of islander Siobhán McFaul and Mr René Meijer on Friday 8th August. This was the first wedding in the church this century and only the fourth wedding since 1945; there were only eight in total last century. The last wedding in the church was in 1989 when Siobhán’s cousin Elizabeth married Mr Derek Curry.

Siobhán, was born and raised on Rathlin, and her parents Neil and Mary McFaul are both originally from the island. The bride, who has two sisters, Irene and Emma, lived on Rathlin until she was 11, when she left to attend secondary school on the mainland. Siobhán met her new husband René, who is from the Netherlands, four years ago in Melbourne, Australia, where she was working and he was visiting to watch Formula One racing. After traveling the West Coast together, René returned to Gouda in Holland and Siobhán returned to Northern Ireland four months later. They frequently visited each other until René moved over in 2005. The couple are now active members of All Saints Parish, Antrim, where René is currently People’s Churchwarden. The Curate of Antrim, the Revd David Ferguson, conducted the wedding ceremony.
The marriage in St Thomas’ brought together 75 guests on Rathlin, including the groom’s parents, Mr Cees and Mrs Wally Meijer. The service was followed by a lunch on the island and a reception at the Londonderry Arms in Carnlough. Priest-in-Charge of Rathlin, the Revd Patrick Barton, who also officiated at the ceremony, warmly congratulated the couple, saying, ‘We are delighted that Siobhán and René have been married in St Thomas’. It is a rare and special occasion for me as Priest-in-Charge of Rathlin, for our small congregation and for all the island. We are glad that Siobhán has returned to Rathlin for her wedding and wish her and René every happiness for the future.’
