Church of Ireland Bishops' Appeal - Overseas Development Aid

Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal, the Church of Ireland World Aid and Development Programme, wishes to add its voice to those who have expressed disappointment at yet another cut in the Irish Overseas Development Aid budget.  The €100 million reduction announced on 7th April brings the total cut to €255 million since July 2008.  This is almost 22% of the total originally allocated for 2009.

At a time when the global economic downturn is hitting the poorest people in the world hardest and the World Health Organisation estimates that more than 200,000 children will die as a result surely a country that is still one of the richest in the world can do better.

Martin O’Connor,
