Launch of Musical Studies Volume

The tenth volume in the series, Irish Musical Studies, will be launched this evening (Saturday) in St Patrick’s Deanery, Dublin. Edited by Dr Barra Boydell (NUI, Maynooth) and Dr Kerry Houston (DIT Conservatory), Music, Ireland and the seventeenth century has been published by Four Courts Press.

The volume consists of a series of papers by distinguished Irish historians and musiciologists, many of whom have already written about aspects of the history of the Church of Ireland. Among such are the editors, who have contributed to the history of Christ Church Cathedral and the forthcoming history of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Professor Raymond Gillespie (NUI, Maynooth) who has written widely on the Church of Ireland in early modern Ireland, and Dr Denise Neary who is, among other things, an expert on music in the Dublin city churches in the seventeenth century. Andrew Robinson writes on Narcissus Marsh, Martin Adams considers Purcell and his music for the centenary of TCD, and Barra Boydell & Maire Egan-Buffet examine music books from the library of Lord Edward Conway.

Dr Houston is the link to an associated event which will be held on Wednesday evening. ‘Architecture and Music in Context’ will be a seminar examining the interaction of architecture and music within St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. This is a collaboration between the cathedral, UCD Architecture, UCD Urban Institute and TCD Engineering departments, and part of a wider programme to analyse and capture the acoustic profiles of both St Patrick’s and Christ Church, and assess the links between music and architecture.  The principal speakers will be the Revd Dr Allan Doig (Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford), whose book, Liturgy and architecture: from early church to the middle ages,  was published last year by Ashgate Press,  Dr John Olley (UCD) and Dr Houston, and there will be demonstrations  of musical acoustics in architecture. The seminar will be preceded by Evensong and attendees are asked to be seated by 5.40pm sharp.

This morning (Saturday) from 10am to 1pm All, Saints’, Blackrock, church and school will have a Springtime Sale in the church grounds in Carysfort Avenue. Blackrock, Co. Dublin. In the Robinson Library, Armagh, under the chairmanship of the Dean of Armagh, the Very Revd Patrick Rooke, the Church of Ireland Historical Society will meet. The principal focus of the meeting will be the Ulster Plantation but there will also be a research paper on disestablishment from James Golden, a student of Professor Roy Foster in Hertford College, Oxford.

In Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, Evensong, today (Saturday), will be sung by Piccolo Lasso, while tomorrow (Sunday) the services will be sung by the Lassus Scholars.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Clogher Clergy Residential Conference begins in Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal and continues until Tuesday. The Bishop of Tuam, Dr Richard Henderson, will run in the London Marathon to raise funds for a Christian Aid project to provide clean water for desert communities in Ethiopia. He also hopes to support the Western Care and Mayo Roscommon Hospice and the ‘Don’t Throw Stones’ project which seeks to encourage dialogue with gay and lesbian Christians in the Anglican Communion.

The final lecture in the successful lunchtime series on Dublin City Graveyards, organized by Dublin City Archives, will be held in City Hall on Tuesday. The historian, Ray Bateson, author of Dead and Buried in Dublin, will speak on ‘History from Gravestones: the Easter Rising’.

In St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, on Friday, Evensong will be sung by the City of London Chamber Choir.
