Clergy from three cities meet at Stormont

Clergy and Christian leaders from the cities of Liverpool, Glasgow and Belfast came together at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, on 20 April 2009 for the annual meeting of the North West Triangle.

Representing the Church of Ireland were the Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy; the Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Rt Revd Harold Miller; and the Revd John McClure.

The North West Triangle meetings began in the mid 1980s and grew out of a recognition that the sectarian violence Belfast was experiencing at the time could be replicated in cities like Glasgow and Liverpool.

The current economic crisis formed the focus for the day’s discussions. Guest speaker was Sir George Quigley, who addressed the genesis, causes and impact of the current financial crisis.

Clergy also had the opportunity to tour Parliament buildings and sit in the public gallery during a debate in the Assembly Chamber. The group also met with MLAs representing the Assembly’s political parties who were invited to address the meeting.

Other Belfast representatives at the meeting were the Revd William Davison, Methodist Church; The Revd Dr Donald Watts, the Revd Wilfred Orr and the Revd Ron Savage, all Presbyterian; The Most Revd Noel Treanor, the Most Revd Tony Farquhar, the Most Revd Donal McKeown and the Most Revd Patrick Walsh, all Roman Catholic; and Major David Jackson, Salvation Army.

Glasgow representatives came from the Church of Scotland, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Scottish Episcopal Church and the United Reformed Church.

Representatives from Liverpool came from the Church of England; Baptist Union; Roman Catholic; Methodist; Salvation Army, and the United Reformed Church.
