New History of St Patrick’s Cathedral
A new history of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, published by Four Courts Press, will be launched tomorrow (Sunday) in the cathedral following the Friends’ Festival Service which begins at 3.15pm.

St Patrick’s cathedral: a history
has been edited by the Revd Dr John Crawford, who has recently retired from the cathedral chapter, having been Prebendary of Tipperkevin since 1984, and the distinguished early modern historian, Professor Raymond Gillespie from NUI Maynooth. The medieval narrative has been written by Professor Howard Clarke, recently retired from UCD, and the early modern section by Professor Gillespie.  The modern period has been divided among Dr Toby Barnard (Hertford College, Oxford), Canon Crawford, Dr Kenneth Milne ( Historiographer of the Church of Ireland) and two deans, one a former holder of the office, Dr Victor Griffin, and the current occupant of the deanery, Dr Robert MacCarthy.

In addition there are specialist chapters on music by Professor Alan Fletcher (UCD) and Dr Kerry Houston (DIT Conservatory), and on architecture by Dr Michael O’Neill, and an introduction to the archival and printed sources by the Librarian & Archivist of the Church of Ireland, Dr Raymond Refaussé.

The new history will, insofar as the sources permit, chart the evolution of St Patrick’s from the medieval to the modern world, analyse the effects of significant events such and the Reformation and disestablishment, as well as chronicling the evolving architecture of the building and describing the changing patterns of liturgy and music.

Today (Saturday) the Cork, Cloyne and Ross Diocesan Synod will be held in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, while the Limerick, Killaloe & Ardfert Diocesan Synod will meet in Hayden’s Hotel, Ballinasloe. The Connor Diocesan Synod will take place on Wednesday in Mallusk parish, Co. Antrim.

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning on RTE 1 at 11.15 there will be a live TV broadcast of an ecumenical service to mark ‘ World Week for Peace in Palestine Israel’ organized by the World Council of Churches. The service, entitled ‘It’s Time for Peace’ will be led by the Revd Darren McCallig, Church of Ireland Chaplain in TCD, and will feature the life-stories and prayers of young Palestinians and Israelis, read by Irish participants in the peace education programme: Youth Connections for Peace. The full liturgy is available by clicking here.

At Evensong in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, the Revd John Clarke, Rector of Navan, will be installed as Prebendary of Tipper, while in St Columb’s Cathedral, Derry, the Revd John Blair, Rector of Faughanvale, will be installed as a canon. The annual Service of Commemoration and Rededication of the St John’s Ambulance Order will be held in Belfast Cathedral where the preacher will be Bishop Gordon McMullan, chaplain of the Order. During the service the Bishop of Connor will dedicate a stained glass window in the sanctuary which has been donated by the Order.

On Thursday in St Peter’s Church, Carrigrohane, the Bishop of Cork will institute the Revd Ian Jonas as incumbent of Carrigrohane Union. Mr Jonas has been Rector of Kilgarriffe, Co. Cork,  since 1997.

A colloquium on euthanasia and end of life issues will be held on Saturday 20 June as a cooperative venture between the Church of Ireland journal, Search, and TCD. Among the speakers will be Robin Gill, Paul Badham, Des O’Neill, Ivana Bacik, Maureen Junker-Kenny and Rory Corbett.
